In the advent of the attack of the Nine-Tailed Beast, the very air and soil was contaminated by its corrosive, malevolent chakra. While most of it was dealt with eventually, a large portion of it siphoned away and sealed into improvised human containers by non-Leaf ninjas, the rest had contaminated a fair bit of the youngest children, usually those recently born and of few months of age.
Some died, some won over the sickness it caused in them and some grew stronger from it, internalizing and making it their own. Whenever it was sheer luck, some hitherto unseen bloodline ability or just a hardy and adaptable enough constitution, a good portion of the child population that night became what would in the future called as Fox-spawn by the more upset people of the village.
How could they not? After all, those children who survived and took the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra for themselves, inherited some of its features, including a miniscule portion of its strength. Some had ears, some tails, whiskers and so on, but all had blood-red eyes, more often than not with inhuman slitted pupils. A living reminder of a horrible night and a way to mask the true container of the Nine-Tailed Beast.
Yes I'm using this again, I don't care.

The sun rises on this glorious new day in Konohagakure no Sato. And why shouldn't it, the village is recovering from previous conflicts as well as the last "natural" disaster quite nicely, even if the after affects still linger.
Today is also the day that Konoha's Ninja Academy accepts its newest students who hope to learn the ways of the ninja. More specifically though, this is the year that those affected by that night eight years ago enter the academy as well. And thus the village as a whole will now turn its attention to those children.
Within the village itself is an orphanage. It probably has a proper name, but it is called the Fox Den by almost all. This is the orphanage where they kept those children affected by that horrible night so many years past. It's easy to tell, as some have obvious signs of the demon beast's chakra, tails and ears that mimic the beast; while others have less obvious signs of being touched, such as abnormal height or an aura of unnaturalness. Some seem less affected then others, having only slightly pointed teeth and ears, and even normal colored eyes; but they are few and far between.
Tis morning, as with every morning, the sounds of the attendants waking up the children can be heard as they trudge to the dining area and get their breakfasts.
Time to start the day.

After being woken up, Kazuma does all the necessary morning rituals such as washing his face and hands, and so on before heading to the dining area to get his own breakfast, resisting the urge to sprint down the hallways. With his aura and more inhuman appearance, that would probably result in heightened tensions. Best eat his food and get on with the day.

After having eaten his breakfast, Kaoru casually strolled through the side alleys alone on his way to the academy. In a way he was both excited for being a Ninja and dissapointed since it meant less time to read his books, do his hobbies, cook (what little he can). The end result was a calm-ish if nervous boy.

"Good morning."
The attendant had been greeted before he even had a chance to knock upon the door to the room of a particular ward. It was the same as every other day, this one kid had a tendency to be awake for quite a time before the call for breakfast came.
What was peculiar however was that the greeting was never vocal, instead a paper of calligraphy was always placed upon his door. The flourishes and background (either a simple few ink clouds or stars or a sun) were always different from day to day, showing that it wasn't simply put up all the time lazily.
"Ah, it's nice today. You're getting better."
The attendant was no fan of the fox-spawn, to be quite honest they gave him the creeps. Not even some of th eoddest and monstruous of shinobi were as unsettling as these... these... kids.
Still, he could admire the penmanship, especially considering it came from a person so young.
"Well, you know what time it is. I trust you'll handle yourself so, do come."
-
Tsurugima did not like to talk. His voice was quite strange and... disturbing after all. As it was he preferred to speak with flowing ink and sword-like brush strokes. Was it any wonder that he admired the blade? that he admired the art and communication that was letters and black liquid upon paper?
To be quite honest he could gush on about it for hours!... perhaps it was a good thing that he only really communicated on paper? His gushing was limited by the amount of paper and ink he had on hand after all! and he had to conserve a good amount for every-day life and emergencies.
With a few prepared notes (to simulate everyday conversation without having to write out new papers and also to conserve ink) a stick and finally a scarf that he fancied and almost always wore on his person, he ventured off.
Oh wait, he had almost forgotten his calligraphy set.
Okay, -now- he was ready.

Takato tugged as his sleeves as he waited for some of the others to get ready. Needless to say, he was really nervous about going to the academy. While his friends seem to have accepted their appearance, he still felt uneasy.
He noticed how some of the caretakers and the villagers looked at them sometimes and he didn't like it one bit. Which is why he tried to hid his ears under a hoodie, wore baggy pants to hide his legs and long sleeves to conceal his claws.
It wasn't that he was ashamed or that he was scared to go alone, but he felt better with these preparations and safer with some of his friends by him.

Time to start the day.
And start the day was in fact, the order of things.
Hanako was prone being an early riser, rolling out of bed early, getting herself tidied up, and helping with getting the chores set for the other children of the Den. For all intents and purposes, if it wasn't for the red color of her eyes, and the black tail that swished absently behind her, she would pass quite nicely for any young child.
At least, you know, as long as she was careful to avoid actually Saying anything.
Still, Hanako wasn't the sort of girl to get upset with things she couldn't change. Help sort everything out for the other kids early on, get some early morning exercise, and then be off on the day's chores on time.
It's jsut that this time around, it was a different job that needed to be done. Actually going to School.
What a novelty. She had done her best to read ahead, and practice where she could, but it would be nice to have a change of pace.
Of course, she still had no idea how she was going to handle this. She didn't have the lightnining penmanship that Tsuru-kun had going for him, but she was at least moderately better at getting her point across without it. Hopefully nobody would call on her in class--that would be a little awkward, and she didn't want to scare anyone.
She turned the corner, most of her own things ready, and stumbled across Takato waiting at the entryway, poking him in the shoulder, and then pointing outwards.
It seemed that she would be willing to help keep an eye on him!

Kaoru just barely catches something out of the corner of his eye and spins quickly to face it. Three boys, just a couple of years older then him, almost managed to sneak up behind him. The lead child had his hand out, it was easy to tell that he'd been about to pull on Kaoru's tail. The lead boy frowns briefly, before putting on a smug look. "So, little fox-brat, what are you doing all alone?" He sneers, as the other two boys attempt to appear menacing.

Done with breakfast, Kazuma humbly thanks the attendants and moves out, heading to the academy. He wanted to pair up with Kaoru, but he pretty much vanished as far as he could understand, so with nothing to think of that could let him track down a fellow orphan, Kazuma headed through the side alleys and such towards the Academy, maybe on the way he'd stumble over Kaoru, but until then he didn't want to run late.

For some reason, there's a part of of Kaoru that's screaming LEEROY JENKINS.
...
It's probably stupidity in hindsight. Regardless Kaoru decided to not really care about much.
This shit happens far too often
"Climbing" Kaoru answers as he jumps on to a Dustbin and scrambled up the alley wall.
In hindsight, Kaoru realize that he chose the wrong side of the wall to climb on when he scramble on to a balcony with a roof jutting out, blocking his way up. Looking down he at least takes the satisfaction of the bullies expression.
He had time to find a way out.
(OOC:Kaoru is also sticking his tongue out at the bullies, I'm just too tired to find a way to incorporate it into the post proper)

OOC: A note to non-player readers, there is some behind the scenes rolling and such going on.
IC: Jogging through the side alleys of the village, away from the orphanage and towards the Academy, Kazuma stumbles upon group of normal kids and Kaoru stuck halfway up the wall. The situation was easy to discern and the hairless Fox-spawn's hands squeeze into fists and the eight year old starts creeping forward as quietly as possible, avoiding stepping on anything that would produce too much noise, be it littered trash, leaves or whatever. All this could be solved very easily.
Coming to stop behind the bullies, Kazuma's usually perpetually dull expression twists into the best glare he can muster while he puffs up his chest, lifts his shoulders and tries to stand as tall as possible on his fox-like digitigrade feet, to tower over the bullies as a terrifying specter. Then, after a moment of thought, he speaks, trying to keep his voice as calm and as intimidating as possible.
"And what do you think you are doing?"

"And what do you think you are doing?"
Hearing a voice behind them, the three bullies stop glaring at Kaoru, and in fact one is so surprised, as well as terrified by the combined aura and stealth of Kazuma, that he runs off without looking behind him. Of the other two turn to Kazuma, who is almost equal to them on his odd feet. The bully on the left looks about ready to break, but the one on the right seems to be holding steady, though there is some worry in his eyes. Righty speaks up, trying to seem like he isn't intimidated, "What do you want, freak?"

"I want you to leave my friends alone." Kazuma replies, making sure to keep his tone as calm and glacial as possible. If they wouldn't listen to him, he would try to stare unblinkingly and as intimidatingly right into their eyes, while making sure to keep up his puffed up looming posture. Show it to them that he wasn't afraid of them, and was quite intimidating himself and they would leave and hopefully never bother Kaoru or him again.

The two boys, push past Kazuma, not saying a word, though once past him, the walk off far more hurriedly then would be considered for a casual, unintimidated, pace. Kazuma and Kaoru, are left in the alley alone, though Kaoru is still stuck on a wall.

Tsurugima despite being tall for his age, does not otherwise stand out by a casual glance. Only by seeing his telltale red eyes or his sharp fangs, or hearing him speak would the average passerby know what he is. By taking the main roads, observable by all, he makes his way unmolested to the academy. There, he waits for the rest of the incoming class. On occasion a parent will approach, seemingly to offer support to the lonesome child, but the halt when they see his eyes and turn away.

Nonchalantly he simply begins to hold up a paper of both greetings and farewell in the same sentence whenever he notes the approach of a person. If they were going to come by that close he may as well be courteous.
As it was with ample time to wait for the rest of the class it was time to practice his calligraphy.
http://[MALICIOUS WEBSITE]/roller/view/4606426/ (95, a good day for him!)
Anxiety of a first day seemed to not be anything that took a hold of him, instead his brush took an animated life of it's own. Few were the mistakes made and few the drops of ink that were wasted.
With a smooth calm approach beyond his maturity, mind and age Tsurugima carried out his work, ending up creating what he would consider his monthly masterpiece!
...How long were the others going to take anyway? It's not like he was that early, right?

Takato looked at Hanako, smiled and bowed, ''Thank you'' showing his gratitude to his friend and the person he always kind of saw as a big sister. Nevermind the fact that they are the same age.
Together they walked down the main street towards the Academy. Because while Takato was scared of getting attention from others, he also didn't want to risk something happening in the alleyway where no one can see them.

As the last stragglers arrive, the head of the academy addresses the assembled crowd. The old veteran speaks about taking the first steps towards being a ninja and an honored member of Konohagakure No Sato. He speaks about how some have come with knowledge of ninja arts already, and others have natural advantages, but that all who choose to serve their village are welcomed. He also speaks of how not everyone who enters the academy becomes a ninja, but that's par for the course.
Once the speech is concluded you are divided into classes, the fox-spawn are largely kept together. While not the majority, they do seem to make up a large portion of the incoming class.
Kaoru, Kazuma, Takato, Hanako, and Tsurugimi are all in the same class, being lead by a chuunin by the name of Yamato, whom many of you believe has a somewhat creepy looking face.
The first day seems to be mostly testing, or rather evaluating your current abilities, physical and mental. The only thing of interest that happens during class hours is one of your fellow orphans from the Den, Kirito who isn't in your class, seems about to go berserk on one of his non-fox-spawn classmates (Though said classmate seemed to be asking for it by pulling on Kirito's ears or tail almost constantly). While Kirito launched himself at the unnamed classmate, their instructor, a female chuunin, performed a jutsu that caused wood to grow and entangle the enraged fox-spawn. Even more strangely, Kirito's rage seemed to drain right out of him once the roots wound around him. It usually takes four or five others to hold him back, and quite a while for him to calm.
But the first day is done, and the students are free to do as the please for the day.

"It was nothing." Kazuma replies abashedly while rubbing the back of his smooth hairless head, before stopping and just shrugging. "I didn't want to deal with them either. Thank Kami for intimidation."
With that said and Kaoru having climbed down, both of the Fox-spawn headed to the Academy. Kazuma wasn't much of a talkative person unless addressed directly, but he tried to keep up the chatter, if only to not upset a fellow orphan and fox-spawn. He did not want to feel disappointed in himself.

Kazuma can only look at all of with with disappointment and exasperation. Disappointment at the classmate that set off Kirito, who might as well have been have pulling on the Kyuubi's tail himself. Exasperation because people still thought of doing this. He would probably have to keep an eye on him, if he thought about pulling his crap on the Den orphans in his class, and do the same thing to him what he did to to the bullyjerks that tried to corner Kaoru. Sneak up on him and scare the Makai out of him.
Still, it was a good thing that Kirito could be calmed now, at least in class. He did not enjoy the times when his fellow orphan went berserk, especially when he was one of the people holding him back.

After done with the testing, Kazuma takes some time to rest and recuperate, before trying to meet the other Den orphans and see if something couldn't be arranged to deal with classmates that were going to be like the one that set off Kirito at the Academy. Pranks, intimidation and such, but absolutely nothing violent unless it was for self-defense, those were going to be the tools to make sure the Den orphans weren't harassed. If the non-Fox-spawn classmates understood that messing with the Fox Den Orphans meant the lot of them teaming up and pranking the everliving Makai out of them, sneak up on and scare the crap out of them and so on. And even if they didn't, it'd still be good stealth and trap training as well as being genuinely amusing and stress relieving, he supposed.
Of course, he'd first bounce off the idea of off the orphans he knew, before approaching the others. That meant talking to Kaoru, Takato, Hanako and Tsurugimi, and see what they thought of the idea. After that, if they approved, they'd have to try to collectively convince the other orphans in the Academy.

Oh, he had forgotten it. It, as he referred to... well, it in his mind was his monthly masterpiece.
At the very least he had signed it, so perhaps someone would discover it and return it to him?
If not well... he'd simply have to replace it, may as well start on it now.
Simply settling in on the outside of the school Tsurugima once more begins to draw.
It was... interesting to be in class. The fact that he forgot his work did however distract him, as was the attentions of the girl who sat besides him who apparently fancied his scarf as she kept giving it a tug.
Still, unlike the brute that was Kirito, Tsurugima had seen it as nothing to really respond to, if even barely acknowledge.
...Okay, so it was a bit distracting at times.
He wondered if she would be continuing this the next day?
Oh. How silly of him, he was thinking about that girl and so he'd ended up writing "maidenhood"
How strange. It wasn't too bad, but it could be better. Let us try again.

General conditioning: You all are doing surprisingly well, above and beyond what was expected of most new students. The teacher's are expecting great things of Hanako
Obstacle Course: Kaoru and Kazuma have a difficult time, though the rest are above average.
Stealth: Tsurugima has difficulty, and Kaoru seems to just give up, Kazuma about average, and Takato above average. Hanako is practically magic as far as other students are concerned.
Basic Knowledge: Tsurugima seems a bit ignorant, but everyone else is about average.
Utilizing your chakra: For all he tries, Kazuma can't seem to consciously touch his chakra, everyone else can almost access it on demand.
At the end of the day, Kazuma's pretty exhausted, but everyone else is good.

Hanako had come prepared.
It was a simple thing really--she knew that the tests were going to be a battery of physical, mental, and spiritual examinations, determining the basic aptitudes for being a Ninja--to that end? Many of her free hours in the past year had gone towards blending her daily routine with training for the big moments. And it had all come in handy at crunch time.
Obstacle Courses? Compared to navigating an orphanage in good time, with all the stuff strewn all over the place, no amount of bars or obstructions could slow her down much.
Physical Conditioning? Easy when you try to make good time, assisting with the chores at every turn, and making things as difficult as possible.
Stealth? She had learned to move silently a long time ago, not wanting to subject someone to her voice, she had learned to supress her instinctive reactions when surprised.
Even knowledge and Chakra were doable, despite not having as much available.
When it all came to a head, Hanako was satisfied with her performance. Not quite the top of the class, but she had proven to know her business--though it didn't stop her from taking a few more passes at the obstacle course at the end of the day to refine her performance there.

Takato felt pretty proud himself. Despite being generally speaking, the one in his group who probably had the least amount of physical endurance, he actually completed the tests, did pretty well in them and he didn't tire himself out! He was so sure that he would have needed to rest after that, but nope, today's his lucky day apparently!
Still, he couldn't help but wonder about Kirito. He wondered if the fellow Orphan was alright after whatever those other students did to him and what the sensei did to stop him. WIth that in mind, Takato decided that he should go check Kirito out and see if he was okay.

Takato Finds Kirito rather easily as the boy has taken a swing on a nearby tree. Thanks to his extra features it's easier to tell his moods even when he isn't facing you. Kirito seems calm, and not quite sullen. As Takato approaches on of Kirito's ears flicks in his direction before he turns around. "Oh... uh... hey Takato..."
